On May 28, a specialized seminar on “Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence – New Opportunities for Business” was held in Stara Zagora, which brought together nearly 30 business representatives, experts and panelists with experience in the application of innovation and artificial intelligence (AI).
The event was organized by ECIC Zagore within the framework of its program for increasing the capacity of business in Stara Zagora and the region. The main objective was to present the current trends, the regulatory framework and the practical applications of artificial intelligence, including in the energy and renewable energy sector. AI developments at global, European and national level, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 and upcoming requirements for businesses from August 2026 were discussed.
Bulgaria has a normative basis, including the Concept for AI Development by 2030, but lacks clear implementation mechanisms, cross-sectoral coordination and a roadmap. Businesses face challenges such as high investment costs, the need for expertise and ensuring data security. AI in energy is a particularly promising direction, but requires cross-sectoral efforts and targeted support. New education programmes, qualification courses and closer cooperation between universities, research institutions and industry are needed.
Despite official documents, stated intentions and structures such as the Inter-ministerial Working Group, business still feels a lack of working communication with the institutions. According to the participants, an advisory mechanism needs to be urgently established to ensure that businesses are informed and supported in the introduction of AI technologies.
The moderator of the event, Mr. Slavcho Neykov, stressed the need for a coherent and well-communicated government strategy for AI, as well as incentives for companies investing in AI solutions. AI is no longer just a topic of the future – it is a present that requires proactivity, partnership and vision. ZAGREA will continue to create platforms for dialogue and support local businesses in their technological transformation.
