4 mixed teams from representatives of the Trakia university, Geo Milev Secondary School, John Atanasov Secondary School, Romain Rolland Secondary School and Prof. Minko Balkanski Secondary School competed in the one-day hackathon, which was held as a side event of the first joint information event of the European Digital Innovation Hubs network in Bulgaria on 5 March 2025.
Mentors of the participants were Petar Bozadzhiev, representative of ICT Strypes Bulgaria and Hristov Hristov, representative of EDIH Zagore in the IT sector. The goal of the competition was to create an IoT solution on the topic “Smart Climate Station – Automation in Everyday Life”, which collects real-time data from sensors (temperature, light, pressure, etc.) and visualizes them on a wireless device (smartphone, tablet or laptop) via WiFi, Bluetooth or the Internet. The solution can be web-based or local, but a working prototype that collects sensor data and presents it in an intuitive way.
At the end of the event, the participants presented their working models to the audience in the hall and explained the steps they had followed in making them.
The first team developed a model to collect real-time environmental data which includes data on temperature, humidity, light intensity and air quality (WEATHER APP).
The second team is working on building a model home security system that monitors signals from motion sensors.
The third team designed a model called Fitness Buddy, a prototype glove that monitors heart rate and, by detecting the position of the hand, can notify vocally if the hand is not in the correct position for the type of exercise.
The fourth and final team is working on a model that could replace the use of a sim card in home elevators, and that provides a connection to an elevator technician via a WiFi connection during an emergency.could replace the use of a sim card in home elevators, and that provides a connection to an elevator technician via a WiFi connection during an emergency.
According to the public vote, the award was given to the proposal for the home security system through a smart door with motion sensors, smoke, video surveillance.
In October, the last part will take place, where these ideas will be built upon after the Artificial Intelligence training over the summer.
